Physical ability testing.

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
Job-related physical performance requirements are used to select candidates per the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards and Education Commission (AFC & PSEC).  The firefighter candidate must successfully complete the Fire Service Joint Labor Management Wellness/Fitness Initiative Program-Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) or other approved validated physical ability evaluation prior to entering a minimum standards course for Fire Fighter I/II, Fire Fighter I/II Bridge, and Fire Fighter I Recertification (based on initial FFI requirements).

 

Events

During the test candidates will wear a 50-pound vest to simulate a breathing apparatus and firefighter protective clothing.  Candidates must also wear long pants, a hard hat, work gloves, and footwear with no open heal or toe.

  1. Stair Climb (an additional 25 pounds will be added to simulate a hose bundle)

  2. Hose Drag

  3. Equipment Carry

  4. Ladder Raise & Extension

  5. Forcible Entry

  6. Search

  7. Rescue

  8. Ceiling Breach & Pull

 

The test is pass/fail and candidates will have 10 minutes and 20 seconds to complete.
